What teeth do dogs use for chewing and eating kibble?

My dog had to have the teeth behind the canine teeth pulled yesterday and I had asked if he needed to be on soft food. I was told that the teeth that were pulled they don%26#039;t use, but when I went to rinse out his mouth after I had fed him, I started to worry that those were his chewing teeth and he might not be able to eat hard kibble afterall. Don%26#039;t dogs use their back teeth for chewing the same way that people do? I don%26#039;t want to give him hard kibble if it will make him sore, yet I know that soft food isn%26#039;t good for his teeth. Help!

A family friend%26#039;s dog lost almost all his teeth, too-- he%26#039;s a springer. He never had any problems with any kind of food; he continues to eat hard food and downs people food with a vengance as well.

Your vet knows what%26#039;s up. I don%26#039;t think there%26#039;s such a thing as a crooked vet, or even one that wouldn%26#039;t do everything necessary for your pet.
Reply:Canines (incisors) rip %26amp; tear. Molars grind.

But to be honest, dogs swallow most of their food whole.
Reply:When I have watched my dog eat he has used his back teeth, what will it hurt to feed your dog soft food. Your vet may be a %26quot;doctor%26quot; but you are the owner. My vet tells me I know my dog better than he does.
Reply:Dog normally use their front teeth to rip apart their food, using their back ones to grind it down and swallow it.But lots of the time a dog wont even chew its food and will just swallow it whole.
