Puppy Teeth?

OK...my Amstaff pup is now a little over 4 months old...I know this is when they start to loose their puppy teeth but I was wondering if there was any way to tell the difference between puppy tooth and adult tooth? See, this morning, he was playing with my older male and they were wrestling on the floor when my pup%26#039;s tooth got caught, believe it or not, on the older one%26#039;s tags. Right away I noticed they were stuck and when I tried to seperate them, they both pulled causing my pups canine tooth to break right above the gum line. Now...I%26#039;m freaking out. I%26#039;m sure its painful but he seems fine. I don%26#039;t think there is anything the vet can do (is there?). However if this is a puppy tooth....he%26#039;ll just loose it anyway. I%26#039;m just worried that it was already replaced by an adult tooth...I have the other piece.....is there a way to tell? I feel so terrible about this......

Puppy Teeth?
The canine teeth usually are the last to fall out and this happens at around 5-6months . Your puppy more than likely broke its baby tooth.

Since the tooth broke above the gumline , I would keep a close eye for any infection or signs of pain.
Reply:How big is the tooth? If it%26#039;s really small like some of his other teeth then it%26#039;s a pup tooth. But if it%26#039;s really LARGE and bigger than the others and about as big as the other males teeth then it%26#039;s probably a big dogs tooth. But at 4 months I think that it%26#039;s a pup tooth.
Reply:The best way to know is by contacting a vet or a reputable breeder. They will be able to tell you, with certainty whether or not it is a baby tooth or an adult tooth.

Being as young as he is, I am going to assume it is probably a baby tooth.
Reply:If it%26#039;s a pretty small tooth and as sharp as a tack it%26#039;s a puppy tooth. Puppy teeth are very razor sharp where as adults are not as sharp.
Reply:The puppy will get his adult k9 teeth at about 5 1/2 to 6 months of age. Most likely was a baby tooth, but call your vet and explain what happened, you wouldn%26#039;t want him to get a tooth root abscess, he may want to put him on some antibiotics.
Reply:It%26#039;s worth a call to the vet. If it%26#039;s a puppy tooth, then it will probably fall out soon. My friend%26#039;s dog broke her tooth and had to get a reconstruction. We were worried about infection, but really it turned out fine. If it turns out to be an adult tooth (not all that likely) the vet should probably extract the remaining tissue to avoid an infection down the road. Good luck. It%26#039;s probably just a puppy tooth, but a phone call is certainly free!
Reply:im sure thats his puppy tooth :D my puppy%26#039;s almost 5 months old and he hasnt lost his canine teeth yet
